Book Review: Trace Your Roots with DNA: Using Genetic Tests to Explore Your Family Tree by Megan Smolenyak and Ann Turner ISBN: 9781609616168

Let’s start out with the one problem with this book.  This book was written in 2004 and a lot of genealogy and DNA resources have changed.  There are many links to many resources listed in this book. A lot of these links no longer work.

Other than some of the links no longer working, this book is still pertinent today.  The authors provide simple, straightforward explanations of many complex genetic terms and practices.

If you are tracing your family history and you plan to use genetics, at least in part, to climb your tree, Trace Your Roots with DNA will help you understand the results you receive.

The book is well written and informative and will probably be your “Go to” resource when you work on your family tree.  Grab your copy now and join us in the fascinating world of family tree research.

Book Review: Genealogy Basics In 30 Minutes by Shannon Combs-Bennett ISBN: 978-1-939924-68-1

Genealogy Basics In 30 Minutes by Shannon Combs-Bennett is a quick little book, loaded with helpful information for someone looking to get started on their family history adventure.

How to name your files consistently and organize your records; how to tame the paper monster; citing your sources; what to pack in your genealogy road trip kit, and the importance of answering for our children the questions that we can no longer ask of our forefathers...all this and more are found in this book.

For a beginner, it is a good starting point. For the experienced genealogist, it is a good reminder of what we should be doing along the way to make things easier for future family researchers, and for ourselves as we get older.

It took me a bit longer than 30 minutes to read, but I tend to slow down and take my time with anything genealogy-related. Genealogy Basics In 30 Minutes is worth the time spent to read it.

I was visiting The Pieces of My Past blog this morning and found this meme called The Ancestors' Geneameme from the Geniaus blog and thought that it would be fun to play along. So, here's my response!

P.S. Annie! - Voices from the Past

Much of this last week, I have been spending more time amongst the dead than the living. I am working on a genealogy book to share with my children so that they don't have the thirty-year+ struggle that I have had tracing my ancestors, many times banging my head against a seemingly unbreakable wall.

P.S. Annie! - Oh, That Granny!

Anybody that has known me long at all knows that I am totally into genealogy. And tonight, this genealogist is on Cloud 9! I found a census report from the year 1900 that has unlocked a question I've tried to answer for the last thirty years and also answered a question that I didn't even know that I should have. Of course, it caused a few more questions, too. :)

My Great-grandma Carrie had sisters named Sallie and Mattie...

P.S. Annie! - Annie, Grace, Rubie and Big Papa

Genealogy research is one of my favorite hobbies. It is a passion. I have been researching my family history since I was about fourteen years old, about thirty-two years now. I have found records and lost them through various means along the way, some that could not be recovered due to the fact that the person that provided me with the information was no...
