Book Review: Grow to Greatness: Smart Growth for Entrepreneurial Businesses by Edward D. Hess ISBN 9780804775342

There are few books that should be considered “business classics”.  This book, Grow to Greatness: Smart Growth for Entrepreneurial Businesses is one of them.

In Search of Excellence started it off, in my opinion.  Good to Great sets a high bar for all other business books, but The One Minute Manager and Who Moved My Cheese give the business leader insight into business in a simple, readable way.

Anyone who has a business and plans to grow that business should read this book.  As business consultants, we can see a great deal of wisdom in the words of Hess. Too often, businesses grow too fast and cannot handle the change. These businesses have not built the proper foundation on which to grow.

To best take advantage of Grow to Greatness, one should read Built to Last and then Good to Great before reading this book.  To round things out, one should also read In Search of Excellence as part of their business education.

In addition to this book, Grow to Greatness, I enjoyed the Coursera course by the same name, which Hess taught through the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia.

Book Review: Be Heart Smart: Understand, Treat, and Prevent Coronary Heart Disease by Dr. Waqar Khan ISBN: 9781732268609

We have been sent several books related to medical practices, diet, exercise, and several books related to heart health. If you just look around a little bit, you will find several.

Many of these books we have read are written by doctors who only want to brag about their credentials and tell us about all the brilliant things they have done in their practices to miracuously save a life.

Many of the doctors who write books now a days have only one tool in their toolbox.  Usually that tools is a drug that they helped develop.

Some doctors use most of their book to promote their practice and some unique method that you can only get from their practice.  Those books will tell readers countless times how to contact their practice.

Dr. Kahn is different.  He tells us about multiple ways we can prevent or treat Coronary Heart Disease.  Some of the treatments are surgical and the doctor describes them in layman’s terms so that almost anyone can understand what will take place.

Unlike many doctors, Dr. Kahn doesn’t have an ax to grind or a particular procedure to promote.  Instead, he tells us about diet, exercise, stress reduction and other simple things we can do to prevent or treat heart problems.

This book is very informative and does not come across as self-promoting like so many others we have read.

Face it, you or someone you love will need to have heart-related services sometime in their future.  Grab a copy of Be Heart Smart now while you can read it and absorb it, and maybe help prevent a heart issue.

Book Review: Using the GAPS Diet: 175 Recipes for Gaining Control of Your Gut Flora by Signe Gad

When your child is sick, you will do just about anything to heal them.  Gut health is more important than many people think. The GAPS Diet can help you heal a sick gut.

The GAPS Diet is different from any diet we have ever heard about.  Most diets suggest you use whole raw foods and, if you do eat meat, to use the leanest cuts of meat with as little fat as possible.  The GAPS Diet turns that advice on its ear.

Using the GAPS Diet: 175 Recipes for Gaining Control of Your Gut Flora by Signe Gad is a compact, but complete, course in following the GAPS Diet.

Readers will learn what is wrong with the typical American diet, which many people refer to as the SAAD.  If you are having problems with your gut, using the GAPS Diet may just well be the answer you are looking for.

Book Reviews: The Tears of Gethsemane by Deborah Faulks ISBN: 978-1-9736-0786-1

The Tears of Gethsemane by Deborah Faulks was a difficult book for me to read and review.  It is very different from most books regarding Christianity.

When I first started reading this book, it was difficult for me to concentrate on it.  I started it over several times because I just wasn’t getting it.

I started to just set it aside for later, but then a prompting told me I really needed to get into this book.  I said multiple prayers and then dug into it.

Once I was able to quiet my mind, I was able to really understand what the author is trying to say.

Suzanne and I are from a charismatic, fundamentalist background.  This being said, we a have a few fundamental theological differences, but the overall feel and message of the book is completely in keeping with our beliefs.

This is not the kind of book one should just plow right through,  It is the kind of book that one should read with a lot of prayer and reflection.  One should keep their favorite translation of the Holy Bible handy and probably another translation to help when one has questions.

The Tears of Gethsemane would make a great small group Bible study. This would probably be the best way to approach it.

Perhaps a group of Christians should take one chapter at a time and spend a week reading and re-reading it as well as prayerfully considering it.  Then, they could come together and discuss it in more detail.

If you miss this book, you have probably missed a blessing.

When you don’t know what to make for supper and everyone is bugging you to feed them NOW, what do you do?

You could go scream into the clown’s head and get some robot food, or you could pick up your copy of Best of Bridge Weekday Suppers: All-New Easy Everyday Recipes by Emily Richards and Sylvia Kong and you are ready to go.

You probably have everything you need to fix most of these recipes.  There are even recipes for dessert in here.

These recipes are easy to follow.  Well, not really. The problem will be when the recipe says to cook the bacon and set it aside.  What cook is going to allow bacon to just sit there without eating it?

If you can resist the bacon long enough for it to actually make it into your recipe, you have the makings for some very tasty meals.

The spiral binding on this book makes it easy to follow the recipes because it doesn’t change the page while your back is turned.  Who hasn’t had the page turn on them while they are making a recipe? This makes for some interesting meals.

This easy to follow book will make a great addition to your cookbook collection. Even a husband can follow these recipes.  Get your copy of Best of Bridge Weekday Suppers today.

Book Review: Two Old Ladies Smiling: A Journey to My Place of Blessing by Michael Cook ISBN: 978-1-5127-9855-5

I don’t know that I have ever read a hug before.  I can’t say that after reading Two Old Ladies Smiling: A Journey to My Place of Blessing by Michael Cook.

By now I think we have read and reviewed just about every kind of book about just about any subject that can be considered to be Christian-friendly. This was a very different kind of book.  How exactly can one categorize a book like this that has a lot of good stuff in it?

This book is the happy, sad, bitter-sweet book about Mike Cook and his family and the story about how he and his wife started and continue to run Allow the Children ministries.

It is more than just that, though.  It is the story about the absolute love he was given from two very special ladies in his life, who showed absolute love to him and to his entire family.

Two Old Ladies Smiling is a story about God’s miracles and how Mike learned to trust in Heavenly Father.  He did not say it in these exact words, but it seems that God was trying to teach him to “Leap and the net will appear”.

If you are a Christian, you have to read this book.  It is an amazing story of an amazing testimony written from the heart.

Two Old Ladies Smiling is the kind of book you will want to share with your friends and loved ones.

The Best Seven Years of My Life: The Story of an Unlikely Caregiver by George Shannon and Chad Patrick Shannon ISBN: 978-1-7326455-4-7

###

In sickness and in health.  Too often people are quick to forget that part of their marriage vows.  We even saw the case from down in Florida a few years back where the husband basically had food withheld from his wife so she would die faster, in spite of protests from her parents, while he was working on his new girlfriend.

We personally have seen people who would have a much better quality of life if they could be kept at home.  Instead, they waste away in a semi-private room at a nursing home while their lives tick away.

The Best Seven Years of My Life: The Story of an Unlikely Caregiver by George Shannon and Chad Patrick Shannon is the story of one man who realized too late that he had been treating his wife wrong for most of their married life.  It is the story of regret and an attempt to somehow make it right.

This is also a story that shows how blessed this family really was.  The author does not tell us whether or not the family realized in all of this how truly blessed they were.  They did talk about being blessed with family and friends.

What isn’t mentioned is how blessed this family was to have resources to help them provide for the wife and mother during her final years.  The family had the financial resources to move and remodel homes. The husband was blessed in that he had a business he could run from his home and take care of his ailing wife.

The family was blessed with a friend who could get a private plane to Mexico to fly the wife back home after her stroke.  Most people don’t have that kind of resources.

This is a story that tells of a family who is going through a tremendous amount of pain, while feeling a tremendous amount of guilt over coulda, shoulda, woulda.

If there is any “Just One Take Away” from The Best Seven Years of My Life, it would have to be, “stop and smell the roses” or “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone”.  George realized too late that it did not matter if the magazines caused clutter. He realized that when we stand before God, He is not going to ask us how neat our house was, how nice our yard looked, how good we did in business, or what our golf score was.

Having suffered three stokes and a diabetic coma myself, I know that having family around, and good positive talk going on, is important.  The patient can hear and understand you even if they cannot communicate with you.

George also learned how important good diet was to his wife’s well-being and recovery.

This story is much different from all the others we have been sent to review.  It does not talk about all the red tape it takes to get a loved one treated. It does not talk about having to fight to get bad nurses taken off the case.  It did not talk about having to wait for hours while insurance and Medicare had to be worked out. It does not talk about having to wait for days without eating because of being NPO for surgery because it takes days to arrange for a Medicaid-approved ambulance to be found.

It is a very good story of a man growing more and more in love with his wife and realizing how he hadn’t understood where she was coming from before.  It is a story of a man realizing that the things that frustrated him the most about his wife were her ways of showing him how much she trusted him to take care of her.

This is a story of how one man took his wedding vows seriously and learned more about “In sickness and in health” than most people ever do.  You need to buy The Best Seven Years of My Life today.
