Book Review: Voting With a Porpoise by Russell Glass and Sean Callahan, Illustrated by Daniel Howarth ISBN: 978-1-7327454-1-4

We all know we should vote.  We also know we should teach our children to vote. The book Voting With a Porpoise by Russell Glass and Sean Callahan, Illustrated by Daniel Howarth, was intended to do that, but it falls short of the mark.

This book does not teach about learning the issues for oneself and understanding where the candidates stand.

We live in a representative republic.  This means we elect officials to make laws for us.  If we do not understand the issues and where each candidate stands on those issues, our vote is dangerous. The book needs to teach children that, yes, they should vote but, they should understand what they are voting for and why.

Voting With a Porpoise can be used as a teaching tool, but parents and teachers should use it as a way to start a conversation about what voting actually means and the importance of the vote itself.

Always Welcome: Nine Decades of Great Friends, Great Times & (Mostly) Great Deals by Welcome W. Wilson Sr. ISBN: 978-1-942945-50-5

One would have to say that this book arrived in the most unusual way. We received a knock on our door and found the postal carrier with a postage due package.  It was this book. While my wife scraped up the $1.12 to pay the postage due, I joked with the mail lady that if they were hoping for a good review, they weren’t starting out on the right foot.

Actually, the only reason that part appears in this review at all is because we are required by the FTC to disclose the details of any item we receive for review that is free or at a discount price.  We have no idea how to go about disclosing that, other than to tell the truth of the matter.

Always Welcome: Nine Decades of Great Friends, Great Times & (Mostly) Great Deals by Welcome W. Wilson Sr. is a very well-told story of the life of a man with an unusual name with a flair for deals and evidently for great storytelling.

Readers are treated to a fascinating story of the life of a mover and shaker who was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth.  In fact, it sounds like, at first, there were very few spoons in his house. But, the original WWW grew up during the depression when times were hard and people had to make ends meet however they could.

Mr. Wilson tells of his time in government and his meeting with multiple presidents of the United States, as well as other fascinating characters.

We find it to be a welcomed change from many memoirs we read, and there have been many, that Welcome doesn’t sugarcoat his mistakes.  Where he made a mistake, he tells us. This is a great way to learn.

As a point of disclosures to the readers of our blogs: As our readers know, we are very Conservative,  Fundamental Christians. That being said, Mr. Wilson discusses the opinion of himself and his wife on abortion.  We do not agree with his stance nor do many of our readers. We do not think that influenced this review in any way.

Always Welcome is a very fascinating book and is one that should probably be read by anyone in business, politics, academie, or who is just plan interested in history.  We award it all five stars and $1.12 postage due.

Purge on the Potomac by David Thomas Roberts ISBN: 978-0998770499

As most of our blog readers know, we don’t normally read fiction.  It is very difficult to review fiction because you don’t want to give away any secrets that might spoil the book.

On the rare occasion that we do read fiction, it is difficult to find any fiction book in keeping with our Christian values.  Too often we find books that are really cheesy romance novels, with a very little bit of plot mixed in between the raunchy sex scenes.

Purge on the Potomac (The Patriot Series) by David Thomas Roberts is different.  It is a very exciting and, at times, funny book about the very real threats we all face since many of our elected officials, at all levels, think we serve at their pleasure rather than the other way around.

It does use the Lord’s name as a curse twice, once on page 192 and again on page 316 of the paperback edition we were given as an advanced media copy for review. This explains why our star rating is not all five stars. Our review policy states up front not to send us any books with the Lord’s name used in vain.

Other than that, this book is the most exciting and interesting fiction book David has ever read.  It takes place here in the State of Texas. What is really interesting to us is that the author, David Thomas Roberts, has a scene take place on a ranch in Shiner, Texas.  Mr Roberts may be aware that there is just such a ranch, owned by the Roberts family, that resembles his description in Shiner, Texas. We know the Roberts that purchased said property is David’s maternal grandpa, Leon Wallis Roberts. He is buried in the Shiner cemetery.

The author does an outstanding job of capturing the sentiment that is held by most Texans regarding the second amendment and interference in The Great State of Texas. It is not a question of IF Texas will secede, but when.

Purge on the Potomac is the kind of book you just can’t put down.  It is very exciting right up to the last page where you have to sit back and say, “Wow”.
